The Date Of Retirement

The longest count-down I have carried out since 500 days and finally that day has appeared.
“The date of retirement”
I have served the Department for almost 39 years. It is the ½ of the Department’s life. I have joined the Department on the birth centenary year of Guglielmo Marconi i.e. in 1974,when Shri P.C. Chatterjee was the Director General, in a city where Acharya J.C. Bose created the smallest lengths of radio wave.I was born on the centenary day of Indian Railway i.e. on 16/04/1953 at the remote village of Mangolkot subdivision in Burdwan district.
With the Chiefs at Shillong 1983-84
Finally I have crossed 60 years, consuming 5000 kgs of rice and same amount of vegetables. Believe me, I have already vanished 1 pond of water with all the fishes, 5000 chicks did not take birth and 50 goats gave their life for my better tomorrow, consumed 25000 cups of tea and with statutory warning – “Smoking Kills”. I have smoked 25 km of Cigarettes. I have already reduced smoking to half and soon it will become ‘Zero’.

My belief : Once man will pull the red planet into the earth’s orbit to create a new earth.

All India Radio in short ‘AIR’ has not appeared so easily. When British India was passing through turmoil due to freedom fighter’s movement, they stopped naming any school as“District School” and any organization as “All India etc. etc.”. Foundation of my school was for District School but finished with the new name as “Burdwan town School”. Similarly ‘AIR’ got a number of objections. As per my the then SD:AIR Kohima, Shri Kondaswami in 1977 in a farewell party, our DG himself (Shri Lionel Fielden) took the file to the Viceroy in a late night party and managed to collect the signature when Viceroy was in very very relaxed mood. Later Shri Kondaswami retired as DDG (E/R). “AIR” came into force on 08/01/1936.
I was fortunate enough to be a part of installation staff, when inauguration of one transmitter every day was going on in the year 1984 and also a part of crash plan in the year 1988-89. Shri H.S. Jolly, CE was awarded ‘PADMASHREE’ during that period. I also know two other ‘PADMASHREE’ winner of the Department, One was Shri Dilip Sengupta, my SD and other was Shri Debdulal Bandyopadhyay, the eminent Bengali news reader of AIR Kolkata with whom I have shared Studio duty for nearly five years. Both were awarded ‘PADMASHREE’ for the creation of Radio programme during Bangladesh War in 1971.I have joined the department on 31st july 1974, which was also the last day of my small
cricket life, the first love.
As a trainee
During my long service life, I could interact with number of excellent engineers for smooth functioning of the system. They are namely S/s. K.M.Paul, S.K. Chatterjee, J.M.Roy, Shiva Rao, S.k. Bandyopadhyay, T.N.G. Dass, P.P. Murlidharan, J.K. Sengupta, Animesh Chakraborty, S.K. Sen, B.K. De, B. Purakayasta, Harshvardhan, K. S. Sharma, P.K.Chaowdhury, P.K. Saha, P.D. Sen, L.K. Pradhan, A.P. Sinha, S. Dattagupta, D. Ray, V.K. Lamba, R.R. Prasad, Ghanshyam, J. Venkatraman and many more including subordinate engineers.
I have served the Department as per its requirement. And I have enjoyed my job. Once I was declared LBW when batting. But it was bat-pad, umpire called me back. I had grabbed the situation, remain not out and we own the match. One offer was presented to me by my CE (Shri R. R. Prasad) and I had grabbed as Chennai and Delhi could not come out with the solutions.
As a trainer
The best pleasure I got after sending around 200 lts of drinking water to Portblair. One Saturday was the Tsunami day and next Monday evening my CE Shri R.R. Prasad requested me and I quotes “do something as 67 staff members including family members and children of AIR Portblair are starving for drinking water”. Contacted Indian Airlines, they refused to take any materials. Contacted Cargo Manager, finally he was ready to accept the drinking water with number of conditions. The last hurdle was to reach Airport within 7.00 p.m. conveyed the same to my CE. In the mean time send the bottles of water by road to Airport. Within ½ an hour my CE conveyed me that our secretary and Civil Aviation Secretary had a discussion and order was conveyed to Cargo Manager, Indian Airlines Kolkata to accept the bottles. Our team reached Airport after 8.00 p.m. and materials were accepted. Very next day my CE had conveyed “ aap ke vega hua pani se 67 jano ka do din ka pyas bujha I am conveying thanks to you”. It was the best prize which I have received from the Department..................
......“I am signing off”

 Namaskar to you all
