Balantrapu Rajanikanta Rao formerStation Director honoured for his scholarly work

A composer par excellence, singer, musicologist, poet, master of musical science, relentless researcher on different traditions of music Balantrapu Rajanikanta Rao was fittingly honoured by Krishnaveni Creations of Vijayawada to mark the birth anniversary of Guglielmo Marconi, who invented the Radio. The function was held in the conference hall of Hotel Ilapuram which was packed to capacity with Rajanikanta Rao’s admirers. Rajani, as he is affectionately known, retired as the Station Director of Aakashvani.

Rajani’s achievements are innumerable. His workAndhra Vaggeyakara Charitra is a treatise tracing the lives and contributions of great lakshanakaras like Bharata Muni, Matanga, Narada, Saranga Deva and Ramamatya till vaggeyakaras and lakshanakaras belonging to recent times. Satapatra Sundari was another of his well known work that contains hundreds of songs penned and tuned by him. The highlight of the function was the presentation of lifetime achievement award to this achiever. Besides conducting and broadcasting many yakshaganas, he composed and conducted musical features for the radio like Megha Sandesam , Nari Tarangini and many more. He was a pioneer of Askahsvani light music programmes.

“Rajani is also instrumental in bringing to light great singers of yesteryears like legendary Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao (who was once told by the film industry that his voice was not fit for films), Rao Bala Saraswati, Pithapuram Nageswara Rao and several others. Rajanikanta Rao gave them plenty of opportunities to show their talent through the radio,” said Padma Shri awardee Turlapati Kutumba Rao, chairman of Andhra Pradesh Grandhalaya Parishat.

Turlapati also narrated many anecdotes from his long association with Rajanikanta Rao. Presiding over the function, R.A. Padmanabha Rao, a scholar and retired deputy director general of Prasarbharati-Aakashvani, also lauded Rajanikanta Rao for his scholarship and administrative ability.

Madugula Ramakrishna, senior announcer in Aakashvani compered the programme.
