Our Cultural Heritage - हमें जिन पर नाज़ है। - Padmashree Patricia Mukhim

Padmashree Patricia Mukhim

Patricia Mukhim has been associated with AIR for at least 30 years and with DDK for at least two decades. As an educator, activist and journalist there are several areas of concern about which She has participated by way of panel discussions or special talks. As a gender activist She has taken up women’s issues with passion and commitment as an advocate for better policies. These have been shared with both AIR and DDK. As a political observer and commentator She has taken part in poll results analysis pertaining to her state and that of the north east region. She has also been a keen observer of health issues in Meghalaya and the hugely deficient health care system leading to abnormally high maternal and infant mortality rates and have expressed this concern over the two mediums AIR and DDK.

Patricia Mukhim is a renowned journalist- activist and believe her brief is to get the attention of government both at the state and centre through incisive articles. She has vehemently opposed and exposed the diminishing returns of militancy when it first started in Meghalaya and was the founder President of Shillong We Care, an organisation that created public awareness on issues of militancy and provided a platform for victims of extortion and intimidation by militant outfits to share their concerns. This was considered a dangerous activity in the years 1994- 1998 when militancy was at its peak and many people were gunned down for opposing the militants’ diktat. Perhaps it was for this act of courage that the Government of India conferred her with Padmashree in the year 2000.

In March 2008, She took on the editorship of Meghalaya’s oldest and largest circulating English daily – The Shillong Times and continues to hold that post. She has been a member of the National Security Advisory Board since 2011 and the National Foundation for Communal Harmony since 2010. She is also currently member of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) New Delhi.

Her Address: Editor, The Shillong Times, Shillong Times Building, Rilbong, Shillong- 4

Now Kashmir after floods... - Dr. Rafeeq Masoodi

First of all let us all thank Almighty that all lives in worst hit catastrophe in j&k state in prasar bharati parivar were saved..but the extent of damage suffered by Radio Kashmir and DDK Srinagar is unimaginable.Technical loss can be rebuild, records washed away and public image loss is irreversible.

The commendable work done by RK and CBS from septembar 5-16 cant be imagined neither by Peasar bharati official at Delhi nor people in the country. Anchors of Radio, many, to name them all is not possible but as a small.humble and ordinary associate of pb parivar, I request CEO, DG's and all authorities to identify all those program, technical, administrative and supportive staff who put their lives at risk and stake but stood for their people and professional requirements' and also find out why some people remained off the scene in most scary and needy times, why casual and irrelevant content was aired without meaning and not rising to the occasion in the state.

Let us have a cell who can reward and award the best and reprimand the worst..the vital record of almost all cultural organization from radio, tv ,academy and sps mueseum is either washed away or damaged to maximum, let me assure you nothing worth keeping or maintaining is left as murky water must have blurred it all.I lived  with it for 36 hours,AIR radio and CBS too were in it,they will know it well.. Hatts off to all the heads of pb parivar in the state but now work of restoration has to be established as yesterday.

My heartfelt sympathies to all pb parivar ex and existing officials who suffers heavy losses during this deluge be it Farooq nazki, shehzadi , bashir  mslik, Simon, Nazir bazar, shabir muujahid, talha, rukhsana, shamshad, javed sofi, ashfaq and many many others about whom we do not know..let any of the establishment compile a detailed  report and send to to CEO who may sanction a relief package for its members family...loss is unimaginable and can not be  written, said or brought to light but this will bring a sense of belonging and feel to them all.It is my personal feeling ,may be rejected may be considered or may not be shown on pb blogs..let all pb parivar donate one day salary to all its parivar fellows in j&k and now Assam or elsewhere who face deluge or nature's FURY...

Radio Kashmir, Srinagar connected people when the connectivity succumbed to the nature’s fury

Soul of Herbert Marshall McLuhan, a Canadian philosopher of communication theory and a public intellectual, must have experienced peace when Radio Kashmir, Srinagar was playing a yeoman’s role in connecting and guiding people when flood fury was ravaging everything that came its way. Notably, the subject that would occupy most of this greatest communication philosopher’s career was the task of understanding the effects of technology as it related to popular culture, and how this in turn affected human beings and their relations with one another in communities.
So far, it stands proved that one of the major disasters which emerged during the catastrophe in Kashmir was the complete breakdown of connectivity – both electronic and physical. The road connectivity succumbing to the natural calamity was obvious, but snapping telecom connectivity was ridiculous. This raised hue and cry among people who had to battle not only to survive but also to locate their near and dear one.
Amid this connectivity crisis, it was Radio Kashmir, Srinagar which played a yeoman’s role to keep people not only connected to near and dear ones, but also updated them about the happening around us during the currency of the flood fury. This voice medium simply stole the show by guiding the people in affected areas to safety and at least, it was an attempt to help affected people to negotiate the miseries.
Here the phrase coined by Marshall McLuhan ‘The medium is the message’ got into the act as the medium of radio was entrenched itself in the message. And it was this entrenching that led to a symbiotic relationship – an act by which the medium influences how the message is perceived. In succinct, Radio Kashmir Srinagar left an impact on the society in which it played a role not only by the content delivered over the medium, but also by the characteristics of the medium itself.
Over two decades back, my teachers had taught me and had even read in books about the role of Radio in catastrophes, but I had never come across such a role of this voice medium till the current disaster struck us.
This heroic effort of the personnel who remained on the mike live for hours together was despite the fact that its studios were also inundated in water and the transmission was stopped for the first time in the history of Radio Kashmir till they resumed transmission on Its FM 102.6 channel from Takht e Sulaiman and main channel from Narbal transmitter.
Precisely, Radio Kashmir proved a life saving communication link and kept its listeners abreast of the situation. The role played by the Radio is commendable by all means with such ‘meager’ resources. The impact of its broadcast during the crisis was chief minister was prompted to come on live on the station to reply some very awkward questions.
Now there is another side. It was for the first time observed that Radio Kashmir put the mother tongue on the back burner and Urdu was preferred. With valley people as target audience, the proper strategy would have been to broadcast its programmes in Kashmiri language. Talking to commoners who could hardly express themselves in Urdu provided much needed entertainment in otherwise very gloomy situation.Even while speaking in Urdu, one of the ace anchors repeatedly used the phrase "toot pada' (pounced) instead of "toot gaya" (Broken) repeatedly while narrating his tale of miseries of the people. There were a few whose pronunciation and accent was simply atrocious. One of the top male anchors used the word logistic instead of logic repeatedly.
I may sound harsh in locating these faults committed by the ace broadcasters of the station. But I am sure professionalism and respect to the language is not surrendered even severe crisis situations like the one we are going through. I consider Radio Kashmir as the torch bearer of our mother tongue and believe me any discrimination towards it does not go well with people.
But, Radio Kashmir Srinagar still deserves a salute for reaching to the unreached during this crisis.

Our Cultural Heritage-O-हमें जिन पर नाज़ है।- Dr.Mallikarjun Mansur

Dr.Mallikarjun Mansur (1910-1992)
Unquestionably the greatest representive of the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana, Mallikarjun Mansur was born in Mansur, a village near Dharwad, Karnataka on 31st December 1910. As a young boy he was more inclined to music than school education. His talented elder brother Basavarj had joined Vaman Rao Master’s Drama company. Soon Mallikarjun also joined the company dropping out of school. Even as a child artiste on the stage he drew applause from the audience in every play he acted, his enchanting voice adding to the attraction. An actor had to be a good singer those days and he embarked on learning Hindustani music seriously. Pt.Nilkantbua Mirajkar honed Mallikarjun’s talent over six years of rigorous training. Returning to the stage in 1939, Mansur drew audiences mainly through sole stirring songs embellishing his acting. H.M.V and Rainbow companies brought out gramophone records of his songs and he became a household name. Later in Bombay Mansur learnt the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana style from Ustad Manjikhan and later from his brother Ustad Burjikhan. He finally settled in Dharwad.
Music was tapas for Mansur. He would forget himself in riyaz day-in and day-out. Authenticity and purity were his watch words. He could sing with effortless ease several complicated and complex ragas like Adambari Kedar, Meghavali and Kukub Bilawal. He also popularized the vachanas of Sivasaranas. It is interesting to note that fame, and concerts, came his way only after he was sixty (That was because he was always immersed in Sadhana and sang more for himself.)

Once Mansur caught the National attention felicitations, awards, prestigious positions poured forth on him: The Sangeeth-Natak award, Padmasri, Padmabhushan, Padmavibhushan and the Kalidas Samman. A.I.R, Dharwad utilized his services as Salahakar for 10 years from 1960. He was the first director of the Department of Music and Fine Arts at Karnatak University. Received Honorary Doctorates from Vishwabharati and Karnatak Universities. Was a nominated member of the Karnataka Legislative Council.

Mallikarjun Mansur breathed his last on 12th September 1992. Hundreds of hours of his music recordings are available in AIR archives. Recently AIR Central archives, New Delhi released five CDs containing his rare ragas and vachanas.
