On 14th October, 1950 he established ‘Ranjan Kala Mandir’ and presented first play ‘Atombomb Va Adkitta’. The movement for drama continued in Nagpur due to Ranjan Kalamandir. Ranjan Kala Mandir became immortal because of his relentless efforts. He seriously thought about progress of Marathi Theatre. As a Director he sculpted many actors. Many tales are famous about his strict discipline.

The Child Plays of Mr. Purushottam Darvekar – Upashi Rakshas, Kabuli Vala, Paryancha Mahal Morucha Mama, Naradachi Shendi, Abra-Ki-Dabra are the famous Child plays. The name of Shri. Purushottam Darvekar became immortal as a Director. His first play ‘Atombomb Va Adkitta’.In the State Play Competition ‘Chandra Nabhicha Dhalala’ his maiden directed play bagged first prize.

His couple of plays (Chandra Nabhicha Dhalala, Nayan Tuze Jadugar, Meru Mandar Dhakute) were based on the plays written by John Van, Rober, Bolt. Therefore, he wrote the play ‘Varhadi Manasa’ based exclusive on Vidarbha culture on the incident of Panshet Dam. The audience can not forget his entry on Panshet Dam.

Famous critic, Mr. Kaned said, ‘It is proved that Purushottam Darvekar is the precious gem gifted to Maharashtra by Vidarbha Marathi theatre.. On the philosophy of ‘Alber Kamu’ the maestro wrote ‘Chandra Nabhicha Dhalala’ and presented gracefully in State Drama Competition. His hero, Chandrasen becomes the dictator because of his desire to possess every thing even desired to grab the moon of the sky in his hands and become the hero.“The entire Universe shall became fearful, Indra shall be defeated. The moon from the sky shall be in my hands on this earth”He becomes cruel with this desire and wish that he shall become the god. He dictates his pupils. The agitated citizens becomes rebellion and the king was killed. ‘The dreams of the poet got melted and the moon from the sky got down- such was the tragic end. It bagged a first prize being a fantastic play.(Taken from the article ‘Vidarbhatil Rangbhumi’ of Prof. Manik Kaned)

He created many actors as a ‘Master’ due to his relentless efforts from the establishment of ‘Ranjankala Mandir’ in 1950 till 1990 in not only in Vidarbha but at Mumbai also. He loved people and people also loved him. His plays covered Music, Dance, drama etc. ‘Natyadarpan’ organization published ‘Darvekar Gaurav’ (January 1978) based on his deeds in the year 1978. No doubt the impact of Purushottam Darvekar is great on Marathi Theatre of Nagpur.
