Her listeners were mainly thousands of refugees, like herself, from West Punjab who had made Delhi their new home. Some of her recordings have been preserved in the local archives of All India Radio Jalandhar, Delhi.

In 1947, she migrated from Lahore, to India, though she remained equally popular in Pakistan throughout her life, as compared to her contemporaries like Mohan Singh and Shiv Kumar Batalvi.

Known as the most important voice for the women in Punjabi literature, in 1956, she became the first woman to win the Sahitya Akademi Award for her magnum opus, a long poem, Sunehe (Messages), later she received the Bhartiya Jnanpith, one of India's highest literary awards, in 1982 for Kagaz Te Canvas (The Paper and the Canvas). The Padma Shri came her way in 1969 and finally, Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian award, in 2004, and in the same year she was honoured with India's highest literary award, given by the Sahitya Akademi (India's Academy of Letters), the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship given to the "immortals of literature" for lifetime achievement.

Remembering Sir Jagdish Chandra Bose - Unsung Hero of Radio Communication

Tribute to One of India's Greatest Scientist, Shri J C Bose on his 156th Birth anniversary.

Achievements of Sir J. C. Bose in the field of communication

Sir J. C. Bose invented the Mercury Coherer (together with the telephone receiver) used by Guglielmo Marconi to receive the radio signal in his first transatlantic radio communication over a distance of 2000 miles from Poldhu, UK to Newfoundland, St. Johns in December 1901.

Guglielmo Marconi was celebrated worldwide for this achievement, but the fact that the receiver was invented by Bose was totally concealed. Read Bose's original paper on the receiver device.

In 1895, Sir J. C. Bose gave his first public demonstration of electromagnetic waves, using them to ring a bell remotely and to explode some gunpowder.

He sent an electromagnetic wave across 75 feet passing through walls and body of the Chairman, Lieutenant Governor of Bengal. (I am in process of ascertaining how this experiment is placed in context of works by other scientists towards demonstrating remote transmission of EM waves).

Sir J. C. Bose holds the first patent worldwide to invent a solid-state diode detector to detect EM waves. The detector was built using a galena crystal.

Sir J. C. Bose was a pioneer in the field of microwave devices. His contribution remains distinguished in the field and was acknowledged by the likes of Lord Kelvin, Lord Rayleigh, etc.Read what people thought about J. C. Bose. Refer to study the work of J. C. Bose in the field of microwave.

The Real Inventor of Marconi's Wireless Receiver

In the year 1998, Dr. Probir K. Bondyopadhyay found out that it was actually Sir J. C. Bose who invented Marconi's Italian Navy Autocoherer. He explained the sequence of events in great detail in his paper, "Sir J. C. Bose's Diode Detector Received Marconi's First Transatlantic Wireless Signal Of December 1901 (The "Italian Navy Coherer" Scandal Revisited)." [ 3, Proc. IEEE, Vol. 86, No. 1, January 1998.]

Read a complete article covering the technical details of Marconi's experiment, the receiving device (coherer) and the chronology of events that took place when the first transatlantic wave was successfully transmitted. The article clearly proves that Sir J. C. Bose was the inventor of the Mercury Autocoherer.

The article goes into technical details and background to enable a person with no knowledge of history of radio communication to understand the contribution of Sir J. C. Bose clearly. You will definitely enjoy the concepts and devices used at a time when modulation was not known and diode had not been invented!

A short version of the complete article now published in Ancient Wireless Association Journal is available here.

Special slot on DD for documentaries

A five-year memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Union government and Indian documentary producers' association (IDPA), where documentaries covering issues from across the country will be screened in a special slot on national broadcaster Doordarshan every week.

"Initially, the documentaries will be screened every Sunday, and once more films begin coming, the frequency of the slot will be increased to even two or three times a week. For the first time, documentary filmmakers will also be paid a substantial amount, which will help them recover some of their production costs," Mike Pandey of IDPA said.

Pandey said that a channel dedicated to broadcast of educational content for young children is being planned by the IDPA by roping in private sponsors. "Afternoons will be dedicated to science and most of the other content will be aimed at children in the first five formative years of their life," he said.

What does it take to run good community radio? Delhi University to develop 'working model'

What does it take to start and successfully run a community radio station in India? A 'working module' is being developed by the Delhi University to ascertain this. The varsity plans to propose the module to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting as a universal model which can be accepted by the Community Radio Association of India in the form of structured guidelines for such stations.

"There are over 170 community radio stations in India, but how many of them are operating successfully and have noteworthy listenership graphs?"This is because not enough research has been done in this area and there are no models which can be followed by these radios to serve their purpose of establishment," Dr Saleem Mir, who is supervising the project, told PTI.

Mir, who is a professor at the DU's Cluster Innovation Centre (CIC), is working on the project with RK Singh, former Engineer-in-Chief of Doordarshan, and six DU students. The varsity is likely to make its recommendations to the ministry by March next year."Since the community radio stations are run by different organisations -- mostly educational institutes, NGOs, small communities and a few gram panchayats -- their target audience and the demographics is also different.

"So, it's a difficult task to develop a universal formula or model which can be applied to all stations across the country," Mir said. The team, which started working on the project last month, is currently visiting various community radio stations and studying the kind of practices followed by them for involving listeners, generating funds and developing content."We have visited CMS Radio (Lucknow), Deccan Radio (Hyderabad), Jamia Radio and Apna Radio in Delhi and Gurgaon Ki Awaaz (Gurgaon)."Next month, we will be going to some community radio stations in the northeast and there are more visits in the pipeline. We will be covering all the zones in the country for the project," Mir said.

Following the visits, there is a plan to conduct surveys in the areas the radio stations operate in order to come up with a programme schedule which can be adopted by all of them, he elaborated."There would be room left for customisation too."For example, a community radio station catering to the farming community will obviously have different demands than the one catering to university students. Another prominent consideration is advertisements as commercials can't be broadcast on community radio stations," Mir added. The module will be tested at DU's community radio station before being proposed to the I&B Ministry and suggestions from experts in the industry will be also be sought regarding the same, he said.

The proposal will also include a training module for the volunteers or the staff working at the community radio station which they would have to mandatorily undergo before getting the licence for broadcasting, Mir added.
