Since 01st Oct 1982 when All India Radio Gangtok was commissioned this station is dedicated to Public Service Broadcasting for the people of Gangtok.

Looking towards the number of suicide cases and drug addiction cases in the area of Sikkim, AIR Gangtok had broadcast two programmes on 06/09/2015 & 27/06/2015 respectively The main objective of both the programmes was to create awareness among the listeners regarding Sikkim Anti Drugs Act (SADA).

Impact of both the programmes in the state of Sikkim was marvellous. We have received many phone calls from listeners about these programmes in our listeners based programme. This is the impact of the individual and the society as a whole.

This station is headed by:
  • Engineering Head: Shri R. L. Aswal, Director Engineering

  • News Head: Shri V. R. Tiwari, Assistant Director (News)
New blood, young and energetic minds and creative ideas have flowed in since the beginning of this year in almost every station of AIR & DD setups. As we reach towards the end of 2015, here’s a flashback of the efforts put in by the working hands at this station apart from the regular transmission duties-

INSTALLATION OF MULTI TRACK RECORDING SYSTEM - One fine day, we started with installation of the MTR system. With the existing setup of a single studio for recording, the idea seemed confusing. Nevertheless, the system was installed properly, commissioned on 13th July, 2015 and is being used since. The work was carried out by Shri A. S. Bisht (EA), Shri Prasenjit Deb (EA), Shri S. K. Mahto (EA), Shri Sachchidanand (EA), Shri Sudhakar Singh (EA), Miss Sneha Banerjee (EA) and Shri K. B. Chettri (Helper) under the competent guidance and supervision of Shri D. P. Nath (AE).

INSTALLATION OF PROGRAMME INPUT RACK AND ERECTION OF RF RIGID LINE - The 10 kW R&S FM transmitter which operates @ 103 MHz wasn’t fully installed. This provided a route to study and put the remaining parts in place.
The programme input rack was completely installed and commissioned on 03rd of August, 2015. Also, a RF rigid line was erected from the transmitter output to the combiner unit from where two private FM transmitters alongwith our transmitter is put on air. The work was completed on 17th of September, 2015.
The work was carried out by Shri A. S. Bisht (EA), Shri Prasenjit Deb (EA), Shri S. K. Mahto (EA) and Shri K. B. Chettri (Helper) under the competent guidance and supervision of Shri D. P. Nath (AE) and Shri Naurang Singh (AE, o/o ADG(E), NEZ).

XTR rear side view
REPLACEMENT OF KELTRON CONSOLES BY D75 WHEATSONE ONES - And finally, our very own KELTRON consoles (both switching and transmission) that aired programmes without any interruption since its inception in 1995 were replaced by the new digital D75 consoles of WHEATSTONE made.

The playback and switching consoles were respectively commissioned on 03rd and 22nd of September, 2015. Both the consoles are smoothly running since. The work was carried out by Shri A. S. Bisht (EA), Shri Prasenjit Deb (EA), Shri S. K. Mahto (EA), Shri Sachchidanand (EA), Miss Sneha Banerjee (EA), Shri D. Pariyar (Sr. Tech.) Shri Ramlal Rai (Tech.) and Shri K. B. Chettri (Helper) under the competent guidance and supervision of Shri D. P. Nath (AE).
All these works wouldn’t have been possible without the regular suggestions and guidance given by Shri. R. L. Aswal (DE).

Brief about RNU Gangtok :
DG- DD’s visit on
15th of Sept., 2015
The regional news unit was set up simultaneously with the commissioning of the All India Radio Gangtok on 1st October, 1982. It was inaugurated by the then I&B Minister Mr N.K.P.Salve. The first news bulletin in Nepali language from AIR Gangtok went on the same day. On the 2nd of October, the first Bulletin in Lepcha language was broadcast. However, Bulletin in Bhutia language could start in July 2007 only.
The programmes/news are transmitted through 20 KW Medium Wave transmitter with 10 KW short-wave support. Prior to the setting up of RNU Gangtok, the news from the State of Sikkim was covered by a Correspondent posted at Gangtok. The news items filed by Gangtok Correspondent was included in the News Bulletins in Nepali language broadcast from All India Radio, Kurseong in Darjeeling District which is the nearest Radio Station broadcasting programmes and news mainly in Nepali language.

However, the setting up of a separate news unit at Gangtok has enabled the people of Sikkim to get latest news about the state from Sikkim itself, that has in a way contributed to the emotional integration of the people with the national mainstream. AIR news in Sikkim has been able to fulfill the information needs of the people. Its service for the people of Sikkim has been especially noteworthy during Lok Sabha, Assembly and Panchayat elections with a whole day special bulletins broadcast from AIR Gangtok.

In times of crisis, political turmoil, natural calamities and even during visits of President, Prime Minister and other high dignitaries to the state, it is the AIR news in Gangtok that people depend . In spite of 13 daily news papers from within the state, AIR Gangtok remains the only source of news in the state, particularly in rural areas. Doordarshan Kendra, Gangtok, is yet to be commissioned.

Hindi Pakhwada ‘15
AIR news bulletins are purely Sikkim centric with inclusion of only such news items from outside the state that have bearing on Sikkim including announcements made by the central government on the issues relating to Sikkim. Besides, the text and audio files of the three language bulletins i.e. Nepali,Lepcha and Bhutia put out by RNU Gangtok are uploaded on the AIR News’ National Portal : newsonair.com, through the Website Unit of the NSD, on a daily basis. These too are accessed to by lakhs of people and are very popular.

According to the surveys conducted from time to time by Audience Research Unit in Sikkim the listenership of AIR, Gangtok news is about 90% which is the highest among the programmes broadcast by Gangtok station.

Acording to the reports, people in general are satisfied with the the news broadcast in Nepali, Bhutia and Lepcha languages.

Retirement Farwell party of Shri C. Lepcha, Security Guard

Almost all employees who come under the New Pensions Scheme have received their PRAN cards. The matter was pursued at the utmost level by the administrative wing.
