INSPIRATION- ALL INDIA RADIO KANNUR’S MANN KI BAAT.....

K Balachandran (Programme Head , AIR Kannur )brings out the story behind Hon PM’ appreciation ……

Group of devoted people at AIR Kannur

AIR Kannur always felt that Mann Ki Baat is not just a VIP radio broadcast. It is more than that. Our Hon PM always speaks the language of the common man highlighting social issues and inspired everyone to participate in the nation building process. All AIR stations in the country have provided wholehearted support to Prime Minister by including these subjects in their daily broadcast. That was the reason behind the idea of organizing an event to popularize Mann Ki Baat. Hence in one of our daily programme meeting a decision was taken to observe the first anniversary of Mann Ki Baat in a befitting manner. The initial idea was to conduct an essay competition on subjects refereed in Mann Ki Baat among school students. This idea was also shared simultaneously with Sri Sukumaran Periyachur , history teacher of Kottody Govt Higher Secondary School who has been associated with All India Radio Kannur since 2011 in organizing public events for AIR. Sri Sukumaran master showed me the notes of one of his students Kum Sradha who is a regular listener of Mann Ki Baat. I could find that Sradha has scribbled something in her note book on Mann Ki Baat which are quite relevant and praise worthy. With the help of her teacher she combined the notes into a good article in English and Hindi on “How she is inspired by PM’s Mann Ki Baat” and sent it to our station. I presented the article before my colleagues in programme section and sought their opinion on encouraging her. Since we did not have much time to invite articles it was felt that it would be better to give a prize for the essay of Kum Sradha which was already with us. Awarding a prize might inspire other students also to listen to Mann Ki Baat regularly in future. That was our idea. My colleagues who have always supported me in all my earlier initiatives immediately agreed to the proposal.
Consequently AIR Kannur arranged a mega function at Kottody Govt Higher Secondary School, near Rajapuram Kasaragod Dt on 5th October in which Prof Richard Hay, the Hon Nominated Parliament member from Kerala presented a certificate and a citation to Kum Sradha. She was also presented a memento which is named as “SRAVYA SAMMAN”. The meeting was attended by Dt , Block,Grama panchayath representatives, public figures , teachers, parents, students and a large public.

Our intention in organizing such an event was to motivate other radio stations to follow our path in organizing such events in their programme zone to achieve the following objectives.

a) The school students who wish to participate in the feedback session will listen to Mann Ki Baat . Other students may also listen to the radio broadcast, Mann Ki Baat. Hon Prime Minister’s words will thus reach the upcoming generation especially when most of his speeches are meant for them .

b) The feedback from students on subjects referred in Mann Ki Baat will give the authorities a chance to understand the viewpoint of new generation on different issues.

c) Akashvani will get a new listeners group ie student community.

As programme head I thought the above objectives should be brought to the notice of Hon Prime minister . Using my registered id I sent a brief note on SRAVYA SAMMAN to mygov.in website on 19th October. On 23rd afternoon I was contacted from PM’s office. The person who attended the phone call asked about the details of SRAVYA SAMMAN and thanked me for the good effort. The next day ie on 24th morning I was again contacted from the same office. This time I was told to explain what exactly happened in Kannur, the objectives behind our initiative and the details of essay written by Kum Sradha. I uploaded the handwritten essay of Kum Sradha both in English and Hindi along with my comments. I also explained over phone the different stages in organizing the event and our objectives behind it.
The rest of the story is known to all

However we would like to reproduce the news item appeared in The Hindu, National daily on Hon Prime Ministers speech in Mann Ki Baat on 25th October 2015 for information of all.

“ Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his monthly Mann ki Baat radio programme on Sunday complimented All India Radio, Kannur, for honouring a student who wrote an article on issues covered in the Prime Minister’s nationwide radio address.

Mr. Modi began his radio address on Sunday by bestowing compliment for the AIR Kannur unit for felicitating Shredha Thampan Nair, a Class XI student of Government Higher Secondary School, Kottodi, in Kasaragod district.

The AIR unit here felicitated Shredha by presenting her the Shravya Award for her feedback on the programme.

“The Prime Minister’s compliment in his Mann ki Baat programme is a feather in our cap,” said AIR Kannur programme head K. Balachandran. He said the Shravya Award was instituted by the unit to popularise the Prime Minister’s radio programme among students. He added that he drew Mr. Modi’s attention to the award through the latter’s Mygov.in website. He said the Prime Minister’s appreciation will encourage debate among students on issues covered by the Mann ki Baat programme.

According to AIR officials here, Sredha, a listener to the Prime Minister’s radio programme, in her feedback article gave her views and suggestions and appreciation on the programme. She was bestowed the award by Richard Hay, MP, at a function at the school on October 5. Schoolteacher Sukumaran Periyachoor had helped Shredha prepare the article.”

AIR Kannur would like to continue the efforts to propagate Mann Ki Baat.

The next stage will be as follows. AIR Kannur will invite positive feedback every month on Mann Ki Baat from students of high school and plus two classes in our programme zone. The students will be asked to write their opinion and their ideas on the subjects referred in Mann Ki Baat. The best five essays will be selected and the students will get a chance to participate in “ Monthly Mann Ki Baat Debate “ which will be held in an school . There will be a panel of jury members to assess their performance in the debate .The best participant will be awarded SRAVYA SAMMAN.

Heartiest Congratulations from Prasar Bharati Parivar.
