AIR plans major push into left war zone with shanti geet, folk songs, welfare talk

This is part of new policy to help
All India Radio reach out to 35 districts
worst affected by Maoist and Naxalite
violence.
The centre has decided to counter Left wing propaganda in Maoist and Naxalite affected areas with a radio broadcast programme riding on "Sanskar Geet," traditional folk songs centred around community welfare and peace in local languages and discourses by religious and spiritual personalities and content showing ill effects of violence in the most affected districts. This is part of the new content policy that it has come up with to help All India Radio reach out to people in 35 districts worst affected by Maoist and Naxalite violence. At present people in these areas that have no access to TV or newspapers and limited radio access. The new content relayed by six new high power transmitters will focus on promoting stories of government schemes to eliminate poverty, showing true stories of how violence has wrecked lives, interviews of law and order authorities in these areas, apart from programmes to promote local culture, sports and arts. Till now AIR in these areas had content only in Hindi or Telugu, largely film songs, but now there will be content in 30 tribal languages, including Bhojpuri, Maithili, Dhurvi, Dorli, Chhattisgarhi, Sindhi, Santhali, Desia , Mundari, Kurukh, Khariya , Ho and Bangla, besides other dialects and languages.

These decisions were taken in a high powered meeting on June 24 initiated by Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi when chief secretaries of seven Naxal-hit states, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Telangana and Maharashtra came together. Nine secretaries of the central ministries participated in the meeting presided over by Home minister Rajnath Singh. The centre has now instructed the I& B ministry and Prasar Bharti to install new high power transmitters in six areas most affected by Left wing extremism. "The transmitters at Jagdalpur, Sambalpur, Bhawanaipatna, Jeypore, Vishakhapatnam and Hyderabad are still based on valve based old technology (and) will be now replaced by solid state transmitters. The centre has allotted a sum of Rs 32 crore for the project, to start with," an official said. High power transmitters in Patna and Ranchi have been replaced with solid state transmitters as part of the reach out efforts. Similarly, setting up of FM transmitters at Sukma, Jagdalpur, Narayanpur, Dantewda and Gaya has been submitted to the I & B ministry for which Rs 300 crore have been allotted, he added.

Weekly programmes are being designed on highlighting the "failings, misdeeds and exploitation of Naxalite groups and also the futility of extremism and violence, promotion of local arts, local folklore, sports, and interactive programmes based on telephone calls to increase participation of state functionaries," says the concept note designed for executing the policy. News based programmes to show how the world is moving forward, government's efforts to reach out to the poor and steps taken by the administration to intensify struggle against "anti-constitutional" elements will also be shown. "Most importantly, there are traditional songs and shanti geet in these areas that we want to record as part of our archives and broadcast on regular intervals," an officials said. "The point of these 15 minute programmes is to make the people there realise how futile violence is and make them turn to education and peace," an official said.

Akashvani Pune - Divyang Warkaries flag off Akashvani 'Studios on Wheel' for Ashadhi Wari with Director/Actor of National Awardee film 'Ringan'

Divyang( Blind) friends and Actors of National Award winning film ‘’Ringan’’ flagged off two Akashvani’s’Studio on wheels’ today i.e.on 29 June 2016 at 5 pm from Akashvani Pune Shivajinagr campus, which will accompany lakhs of people walking in wari from Dehu and Alandi to Pandarpur. Ashadhiwari is a historic event, a yearly yatra by lakhs of persons – around 250kms covered in 18 days, which dates back to 16th century. In the WARI participant WARKARIS are undaunted by natural impediments (rain or shine, winds and darkness) and hardships of the walk. Participating in the WARI is its own reward and Panduranga the lone object of worship. The WARI is a microcosm of the vast sects, sub-sects, castes and trades that go into the making of the state of Maharastra – as men, women, young and old people from all walks of life, age and socio-economic status walk alongside each other, never for a moment being aware of their differences or status.

Akashvani Pune has been giving live commentary of the wari procession for past 20 years as it passed through the city of Pune, but since last year Akashvani Pune took a unique initiative and sent two vehicles (Studios on Wheel) along with wari, to catch the bytes and feelings of this historic journey on whole of it’s route. Akashvani Pune programmers and engineers move with lakhs of devotees and record the interviews, bhakti songs, special events 24X7 and prepare a daily radio report which is broadcast on all Akashvani stations of Maharashtra. Trying to truly live up to it’s mission statement – BahujanHitaya- BahujanSukhaya, this is Akashvani Pune’s humble effort to connect with the people at large, walking on streets.

As it’s tribute to lakhs of warkaries who walk together forgetting the man-made differences of caste, creed and economic and physical disparities, this year Akashvani Pune’s Studio on wheels are flagged off today by two Divyang ( Blind) friends, Shri Shantaram Gawade and Shri Ganpat Jagtap who despite their physical challenges have been walking (250 kms) for 21 days in wari for 20 years regularly. Director and actor of National Award winning film ‘Ringan’ Shri Makarand Mane and Shri Shashank Shende, which is having wari theme were also there during the flag off. This type of Radio coverage of such a magnitude continuously for over two weeks will be a world record and the AkashvaniPune team is working for it’s entry / documentation in Limca book of world record this year.

The flag off was done by Shri Prakash Chabria,Chaiman,Finolex Pipes and two Divyang ( Blind) friends, Shri Shantaram Gawade and Shri Ganpat Jagtap. Shri R.D.Chavan,AGM,Bank of Maharashtra,Shri Ashish Bhatnagar,DDG,AIR Pune,Shri Nitin Kelkar,DD, News,AIR Pune and Shri Ravindra Khasnis,Head of Prog.,AIR Pune graced the event.

Government to announce launch of free study material for IIT-JEE

Aspirants to the coveted Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and other premier engineering institutes can now look forward to a readily accessible resource for preparation. The government is set to provide study material free of cost through various media, including a dedicated website, YouTube and three free-to-air TV channels to be launched by Doordarshan. The launch is likely to be announced on August 15. The move comes amid concerns over growing anxiety among students regarding entry to premier engineering institutes that has led to an increase in instances of suicide among those who fail to make the cut. Competition has also led to mushrooming of coaching institutes that often charge lakhs of rupees. "Any student can access content any time of the day. The government intends to give equal opportunity to all students to be able to crack IITs without — or with minimum reliance on — the coaching institutes," said a senior government official, who did not wish to be identified.

Besides content, regular assignments and tests will be part of the material, the official said. In addition, the government will launch an 8 am to 8 pm helpline to answer queries regarding the entrance examination, he said. "Right now, it is difficult even for the brightest student to get through IIT without coaching. This initiative will certainly reduce that need," a senior professor at one of the older IITs said on condition of anonymity. A team of at least 10 ace teachers is being put together for the project. Efforts are on to pick the best teachers from among IITs, Kendriya Vidyalayas, retirees and professors, and even faculty at private coaching centres. In addition, top 100 JEE rankers will share tips with aspiring students to solve the questions in less time, another official said. Three free-to-air channels to be launched by Doordarshan have been slotted for IITs, mostly the old ones. Besides, there will be live content streaming for four hours daily over DTH and internet platforms, with the capsule being repeated through the day. "This should reduce stress among students who are aspiring for engineering institutes," said a professor, who is part of this programme. Regular assignments and tests will be conducted online, partly on Massive Online Open Courses or MOOC on 'Swayam' platform.

Free TV channels proliferating; here’s why

With BARC’s rural data, the business sentiment for FTA (free-to-air) channels is improving. So much so that some broadcasters are now turning their pay channels into FTA, while others are launching such channels from scratch. What is the potential of this market? In a cost-sensitive country like India where ‘free’ acts as a magnet for the otherwise flickering consumer, television broadcasters are latching onto the typical ‘Indian’ mentality if you will, by offering Free to Air (FTA) channels. Technically a freemium model, there were hardly any FTA channels till a few years back, with the scenario largely dominated by Doordarshan and its various extensions. These channels mainly targeted the rural audience with low purchasing power, and lack of viewership measurement further forced the broadcasters and advertisers to look away from offering their channels free of cost to the audience. Ratings agency BARC India heralded a change by reporting rural viewership data for the first time. BARC India has a reach of around 153.5 million TV households representing All India and all modes of signal; out of which 77.5 million are urban and 76 million are rural TV households. This has given an impetus to broadcasters and advertisers alike to identify and target the markets and consumers they want to, as a result, providing an opportunity for more FTA entertainment channels.

With BARC highlighting the viewership that was not being captured earlier, one can clearly see the extent of penetration of FTA channels. Identifying the potential of this vast market and seeing a whole new untapped chunk of audience, many broadcasters refined their FTA channel strategy. As a result, in recent times, one has seen either some pay channels giving up subscription revenues to adopt an advertising-led model or have new launches, especially in the Hindi movie genre.

Prasar Bharati plans digital brand to tell India story

Aiming to reinvent itself in the digital era, public broadcaster Prasar Bharati has set its sights on cyberspace to create a distinct digital platform, in addition to Doordarshan and All India Radio (AIR), to tell the India story to the global audience. The proposal to create an exclusive, innovative digital platform gained traction as there is a realisation in Prasar Bharati that many global broadcasting majors like Al Jazeera, Russia Today and NPR of the US have formidable presence on the net. Prasar Bharati Chairman A Surya Prakash has set up a special 'Committee for Digital Platform', which held its first meeting on June 16, to get things moving in this direction, sources told PTI.

Apart from Prakash, who heads the panel, others on the committee include Prasar Bharati Board members Shashi Shekhar Vempati, who heads an online media company, Business executive Sunil Alagh and its Member (Finance) Rajeev Singh. Others on the panel to brainstorm on setting up the digital platform include senior journalist R Jagannathan, academician Vamsee Juluri and entrepreneur Ritesh Bawri, sources said. "The thinking is to create a top digital news brand with international focus, which can present the Indian point of view and perspective on global events," a senior official said. It has been proposed that the digital platform should include a website, a mobile app, social media channels like Twitter, Facebook, G+ etc. It should also have presence on Youtube, WatsApp, Viber etc, sources said. This digital brand should be at par with the best in the world for which capabilities would have to be developed, they added.
The platform could start in English and later branch out to include major global languages like Spanish, French etc, an official said. "The committee in its first meeting deliberated on a range of issues including whether this new entity could come up in Public private partnership mode, technologies to be adopted, manpower matters etc. Decision in this regard will be taken after the committee submit its report to the Prasar Bharati board," a senior official said.

AIR SATARA is a non cosited station situated in western ghat of sahyadri mountain in maharashtra. AIR and LPT TV transmitters  are cosited on the hilltop of historical AJINKYTARA fort.

It has to face lots of difficulties due to its location such as there is no public transport, office vehicle reaches only upto main entrance of fort from where staff has to carry material on overhead via curvy stonned ladder to the fort and then half kilometer footpath to the transmitter entrance which becomes more difficult in rainy season due to occurance of wlld animals. There are no shops, houses or any residential places on the hilltop.

There is no water supply to the fort and drinking water is to be carried out daily on overhead. There is one pond near the transmitter which is the only source for need of day  to day water use.Due to drought like situation for last two years pond had dried completely and staff had to face accute scarcity of water.

In the wake of coming monsoon, the entire staff of AIR and DD carried out work of pond cleaning for last two weeks,by voluntarily removing mud slurry and sand to the tune of two trucks manuually by the way of SHRAMDAAN.

Now all are praying for monsoon rain to fill up the pond and hearts too with plenty of water..
