8 Doordarshan TV shows that will make 90s kids nostalgic

In a time where the life span of TV shows are barely three-four months we are often reminded of shows that aired in the 90s. They not only ran for years but also have an lasting impression on our minds. Be it the stories, title track or characters they are still afresh in the minds of the viewers. Today, we have the luxury of switching to different channels but the joy of watching classic TV shows on Doordarshan was something else. We still have some sweet memories of those old Doordarshan days. Let us take you down to a nostalgic trip of 'good old days'. Dekh Bhai Dekh: Saas-bahu sagas and reality shows rule the idiot box these days. But there was a time when the entire family used to sit together and enjoy TV shows. Some of them went on to gain cult status and few made it to the list of the most memorable shows of all times. Dekh Bhai Dekh used to be one such show. The Indian audience was in love with three generations of the Diwan family and they could relate to each character in the show. Even after almost two decades, Dekh Bhai Dekh remains the most loved show of all times. ChandraKanta: It is an Indian fantasy TV series partly based on Devaki Nandan Khatri's novel. It was originally telecast on Doordarshan and was produced by Nirja Guleri. The fantasy show directed by Sunil Agnihotri was a hit due to its unique and interesting character sketch. Characters like Krur Singh, Chandrakanta, Badrinath, Tej Singh became household names. The show was later aired on Star Plus and Sony TV. It was lately remade for Sahara One.

Vikram Aur Betaal: Vikram Aur Betaal is based on Betaal Pachisi, written nearly 2,500 years ago by Mahakavi Somdev Bhatt. These are spellbinding stories told to the wise King Vikramaditya by the ghost Betaal. Betaal, narrates a story to the king, concluding that Vikramaditya must answer a moral question pertaining to the story's characters and upon his answering the question, Betaal returns to his tree saying ‘Tu Bola… Main Chala.’Shaktimaan: Those who have grown-up watching the first Indian superhero of TV, Shaktimaan, fighting the evil forces in 90s, will clearly remember all its characters. The character received immense popularity and Mukesh Khanna, who played the character is still remembered for the role. The show was watched by parents and kids with equal interest. In the short 'education series' towards the end of the episode Shaktimaan would impart moral values in kids and also pull up their parents for doing the wrong thing. Shrimanji Shrimatiji: While today 'Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hain' is tickling audiences funny bone, but there was a time when sitcom Shriman Shrimati, ruled viewers hearts. It featured actors like Reema Lagoo and Archana Puran Singh, Rakesh Bedi and Jatin Kankania in lead roles. The show saw two neighbours flirting with each other's wives but ended up making complete fool of themselves. Captain Vyom: Captain Vyom had captured the imagination of every child in the country who aspired to take off into a space voyage to the future. The story of the series is about Captain Vyom, played by Milind Soman. Directed by National Award winning director Ketan Mehta, Captain Vyom is the first Indian live-action superhero science fiction (sci-fi) television series, which was aired on DD National at the end of the century. The TV series pioneered the art of computer animation and visual effects in India.

Alif Laila: Alif Laila is a TV series based on stories from 'The Arabian Nights'. Each episode of the series starts right from the very beginning when Scheherazade starts telling stories to Shahryar and how he finds each of her stories interesting. Apart from these two characters, the huge Green Jeanie, the title song and the brave Vazir are still fresh in our minds. Damini Shetty who played the pivotal role in the fantasy show turned a producer with Colors Baani- Ishq Da Kalma. Audience would love to experience the magic of Alif Laila once again. Hope TV producers are listening. Byomkesh Bakshi: It is the first Hindi Television series based on the Byomkesh Bakshi character created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. The series featured Rajit Kapur and K.K. Raina as Byomkesh Bakshi and Ajit Bandyopadhyay respectively. It was a critically acclaimed and most celebrated adaptation of the character keeping it fresh even after decades. The interesting twists and the climax of the TV series often left the viewers surprised.
