CAST IS NO BAR FOR FOLK ARTIST-SHOBHA KARANDLAJE, MP

All India Radio is recorded local art, culture, folk songs etc., to the next generation, which is very much useful to the society said by Kota Shrinivas Poojary.  He was inaugurating the work shop on Samskar Geeth-Kolu Hoyyuva songs held at Sri Durga Parameshwari Temple, Mandarthi organized by All India Radio Mangalore.  Dalit community had taken up the responsibility of a moral sentinel and, once in a year in the month of Kodi, gave a moral dressing down to all castes, a team of three women of Upparasetty community, a sub sect of Mera caste, used to visit the houses of each and every caste in a given village imparting moral lesson  and this is in our Udupi District he said.
A lesson on the necessity of imbibing sambskara, and most importantly, treading the righteous path-truth, justice, morality and benevolence.  Two women sing the verses for the quaint clashes of two – for – each sticks.  As per their convenience of the moment, either one or two sing and one or two chime in with a Pallavi ‘kolu kolenni hoogina kolu kole.  The songs are hightly lyrical, poetic and melodious said Dr Uday Barkur, Head of History Dept., Mangalore University.

Station Director in his presidential address.  All India Radio will preserve these folk art by recording, transcription in local language and translate in to Hindi and English language and it will be sent to our Central library Dr Perla added.
India had always been known as the land that portrayed cultural and traditional vibrancy through its conventional arts and crafts.  The folk and tribal arts of India speak volumes about the country’s rich heritage said Udupi-Chikkmagaluru Member of Parliament Shobha Karandlaje in her valedictory address.  Folk artists are innocent  and sincere,   they have come forward with mainstream she added.

PM Modi's alertness saved the life of Doordarshan cameraman

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's alertness during the inauguration of Saurashtra Narmada Avataran Irrigation (SAUNI) project in Jamnagar, Gujarat saved the life of a Doordarshan cameraman from being swept away on Tuesday. The Prime Minister was at a function to release the water of Aji dam when he saw a cameraman standing close to the dam and alerted him.

Realising what the Prime Minister was pointing out, the cameraman seems to have moved away in the nick of time. Photographs from the incident show that the camera was later washed away by the water released from the dam. The tripod and camera were later recovered, ANI reported.
In the visuals from the incident, PM Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani can be seen pointing at something off the frame. Here is the video from the incident: https://twitter.com/ANI_news/status/770602584352497665

Inspiration - How Many Trees Have You Planted? 5? 10?... This Man Planted 10 Million!

He collects the seeds every season and raises a nursery of red sanders and distributes the plants for free. He takes whatever anyone gives as price for his plants and uses the money for raising more plants. He is not just an environmentalist but also an economist, sociologist, scientist, mathematician and, above all, a Metaphysicist.

He asks, “Why doesn’t the State plant commercially useful species like Teak and Red Sanders in the waste lands, rear them and sell them in the market?” Maybe the State Governments have to seriously think of this option. (It is learnt that the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh is planning to auction the red sanders seized from the tree mafia. Ramaiah had suggested this as an economic activity and exhibited his fore thought).

Ramaiah became a sculptor also by accident, or should we say, because of an accident. When he was chased by children while on his cycle, he fell and sustained a fracture. This immobilised him for few months. His undying spirit told him that while his legs are immobile, his hands are still free. Thus he learnt sculpting with the help of nails and hammers. He left no stone un-sculpted with slogans and images of leaves, plants and trees. “Every sapling that I plant should survive, come what may. That is my motto.”

Once, he found it difficult to break the shells of teak seeds, it being painful and time consuming. While he spent all his spare time on this, he still found that his task was far from being completed. He then made a seat of it for his wife who sits near the fire place for cooking. Her constant movements and her frequent sitting on the bag helped in breaking the shells, making his task easier. This small episode only tells how involved was Ramaiah in his task. In his journey, his wife also played a very important role. She stood by his side through thick and thin and helped him in fulfilling his passion. He has developed his own green philosophy.

He says, “Instead of giving a fruit to a child, give them a plant. Let them nurture the plant into a tree and enjoy its fruits forever. This way, they learn to love nature. Today children are tomorrow’s citizens. Similarly, today’s plants are tomorrow’s trees.” What great thoughts. Ramaiah does not require a doctorate to profess these words. He is a highly honoured man in his area. He adorns himself with crowns and scarfs with slogans written on them and parades his area on his cycle like an emperor. All those who heckled him once, adore him now. He has spent his entire life time in greening the land like a soldier who spends his life time protecting his mother land.

There could be many people who have done their jobs with passion, but Ramaiah chose his passion as his unpaid job. There cannot be another Ramaiah when it comes to raising trees. He is a great model of humility and devotion to work. He is an inspiration to many, and at least at this late age, he deserves recognition.

Daripalli Ramaiah is a man on mission to plant trees and bring back the green cover. Wherever he sees a barren spot, he takes out seeds from his pocket and plants them. People say he has planted over a crore trees. Know more about the unsung hero and his extraordinary work.

“Of all the species that consider the earth as their home, the most exalted is the human being. He supposedly has intellect, can think, can do and can get things done. Nature has bestowed her choicest blessings on this form of life. Therefore, we have a duty towards Nature. Protect the nature; protect everything created by God, for the posterity,” says Daripalli Ramaiah, native of Khammam district presently in Telangana State. Not stopping here, he collects all waste material such as used clutch plates, tin pieces – you name it – and paints slogans depicting the importance of trees. His main slogan is “Vrikshio Rakshati Rakshitah”, which means if you save the trees, they will save you. He wears them as his crown and moves about in his area with pride, jocularly remarking, “Am I not as beautiful as ‘Miss World’? This is my identity.”

"I do not believe in people who cut trees but prostrate before a stone. For me, Nature is God and God is Nature.”

AIR's 'Akashvani Maitree' to swap shows with 'Bangladesh Betaar': Modi

Lauding the launch of ‘Akashvani Maitree’ as a major step towards increasing people-to-people contacts, prime minister Narendra Modi has congratulated All India Radio for contributing to the foreign policy of the country. He also announced on Sunday during his monthly Mann ki Baat on All India Radio that ‘Akashvani Maitree’ will exchange programmes with ‘Bangladesh Betaar’ so that there is greater interaction between the two countries. Noting that some people may ask why President Pranab Mukherjee should be invited to inaugurate a radio station, Modi said this was no ordinary venture and was aimed at increasing the bonds of friendship between the two neighbouring countries. He said both West Bengal and Bangladesh shared the same cultural heritage and so, it was a major move by All India Radio.

Akashvani Maitree and its multimedia website is a unique venture and initiative of All India Radio not only for the Bengali listeners in West Bengal, Bangladesh and the adjoining areas but the entire Bengali speaking diaspora living in different parts of the globe. The station is a terrestrial channel beamed from Chinsurah from a state-of-the-art DRM high power transmitter which is capable of reaching out to listeners in both West Bengal and the whole of Bangladesh. Earlier, AIR External Services Director Amlan Jyoti Mazumdar had earlier told 'radioandmusic.com' that the most unique aspect was that the new channel would also beam programmes that are either co-productions or produced by producers from Bangladesh. It could also be streamed online 'onairworldservice.org.'

Free Dish capacity to go up from 80 to 104 TV channels before year-end

Free Dish, the country’s only free-to-air direct-to-home television platform, will increase its capacity to carry around 104 channels within the next few months. A senior Doordarshan official told indiantelevision.com that the process of switching over from MPEG2 to MPEG4 had been completed and was being tested. This had already taken the headend capacity to 112. Free Dish at present carries eighty television channels including its own, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha TV, and private channels, apart from 32 channels of All India Radio. The official said the platform had been encrypted by adopting the Indian Conditional Access System (iCAS) developed by By Design India Pvt. Ltd. of Bangalore. But he clarified that the platform would remain free-to-air and the aim of iCAS was only to keep track of the number of households that were using Free Dish and keep a check on the quality of set top boxes. (It is also learnt that Doordarshan is expected to issue an Expression of Notice within a month for manufacture of compatible STBs for Free Dish.)

Meanwhile, the official said Free Dish was also hopeful of re-launching Gyan Darshan on its platform shortly as the problems that the Indira Gandhi National Open University was facing when DD was forced to take the channel off-air have been ‘virtually sorted out’. However, the official said no communication had been received from the Human Resource Development Ministry in this connection so far. He denied reports that any channels of the Human Resource Development Ministry were currently under test transmission on Free Dish. The official said DD was aware of the announcement by Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Jawadekar that 32 Direct to Home (DTH) Television Channels are to be launched by September for providing high quality educational content to all teachers, students and citizens across the country interested in lifelong learning. DD was also aware that the HRD Ministry had acquired two transponders on G-SAT 15, which could possibly be used for this.

Meanwhile, the official said that all information on Free Dish was available on the ddindia.gov.in website and denied that Free Dish had established any separate website Freedish.in. When his attention was drawn to the website, he said attempts would be made to find out who was running the website which was clearly illegal.

Inspiration - MS Rawat went from selling tea & working in fields to fulfill his dream of taking part in the Olympics

Rio Olympics 2016 gave India new sporting icons in Dipa Karmakar, Sakshi Malik and P.V.Sindhu, but there were also several heartening stories of Indian players that went unnoticed in the race for medals. Few people know that India was represented by a part-time waiter at the racewalking event at the Rio Olympics. Fewer still know that he bested previous Olympic Medal winners in the competition and narrowly missed the bronze medal by less than a mn 2002, when his father passed away, 10-year-old Rawat saw his mother toil in the fields to make ends meet for the family of four children, including him. Rawat would work with his mother on the farm in the morning before heading to school about seven kms away by foot. In 2006, he took up a part-time job as a waiter at a small eatery near his hometown, Sattar, in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. With two sisters and a young brother at home, Rawat had a hard time sustaining his family on his meagre income as a waiter. Knowing that excelling in athletics could help him get a government job, Rawat decided to pursue racewalking.

Racewalking is a long-distance discipline within the sport of athletics. Although it is a foot race, it is different from running in that one foot must appear to be in contact with the ground at all times (over the course of 20 km, at no point can both your feet be mid-air). This is why, apart from the inherent stamina, technique and fitness required in any long distance race, racewalking also tests mental. But Rawat refused to be put off by the lack of world class equipment and a stream of naysayers at Badrinath who would make fun of his walking practice. He pursued his Olympic dream with utmost devotion. Training on the hilly terrain in torn shoes, Rawat continued to juggle several jobs to make ends meet for his family and also support his training. From working as a house help and tourist guide to labouring on farms and driving tractors, the Uttarakhand lad did everything. All through his struggle, people continued to make fun of him, not knowing that the young man was on his way to taking part in the greatest sports show on earth.

In 2010, Rawat tried to get a job with the police through the sports quota. He was desperate to improve the financial situation of his family. This job would give him a salary of Rs 10,000 and all his training and participation at events would be sponsored. However, he was rejected. This was financially the most difficult time for him, and Rawat considered quitting the sport in order to fend for his family. It was his coach who convinced Rawat that he was making progress and that he had a future in the sport.............

Thank you for the music.

Those were the days The radio was a constant companion
Sangeeet Sarita announces a voice and I start. The last time I heard that was many, many years ago. It was my cue to groan as my Dad fine-tuned the radio, increased the volume and waited expectantly for me to guess the raga of the song playing. The programme picked one classical raga every day and played a filmy song and a pure classical number based on it. I got the raga wrong every single time, but Daddy did not lose faith. Now it is back in my life. Not just Sangeet Sarita, but Vividh Bharti. So if you drop in home in the mornings, we will serve you good coffee and a blast of music. Raju has downloaded the Vividh Bharati app and, as we have gifted ourselves a Bose speaker for our anniversary this year, we are stoked. Such a wonderfully civilised way to start the day. And I swear I am less cranky with all the singing I do along with Rafi, Kishore, Asha, Geeta Dutt and of course Raju. Then we managed to catch an interview of Ameen Sayani on television and Raju and I are still talking about that. Remember Binaca Geetmala? Wednesday nights and Ameen Sayani would start with his signature greeting of “Bhaiyon aur behenon...” Binaca Geetmala was broadcast on Wednesdays at 9.00 p.m. on Radio Ceylon and the entire family huddled around the radio set. One of us had to hold the knob of the radio firmly so that it would not shift and change the station. There were heated discussions and guessing games on what the ‘sartaj geet’ was going to be (the top of the charts of those days) that year. Hearing Ameen Sayani’s voice brought back glorious memories of simple pleasures. Raju remembers how, during Pujas for the evening entertainment programme, an Ameen Sayani sound-alike was hired to conduct the proceedings.

I wish the radio as I knew it as a child would back into my life. I was thrilled when WorldSpace started and heartbroken when it stopped. I enjoy music floating through the house. Love it when I can sing along loudly from the kitchen. I have bought iPods, and MP3s and earphones but abandoned all those because I hate something stuck into my ears with the wires getting tangled with my spectacles, buttons, etc. When ‘Tere mere sapne ab ek rang hai’ is playing, what is the point if only I can hear it? Raju has to be in on it too, along with our neighbours. The unpredictability of what song will play next on the radio is thrilling. It is not some playlist which we know by heart. There are days I am swept away because each song played is a favourite. From Guide, Amar Prem, Teesri Manzil... I remember the other programmes like Man Chahe Geet, Fauji Bhaiyon Ke Liye, and Manoranjan. I always waited to know song what the fauji bhai from Jhumri Talaiya would request this time. Sometimes, the film song programmes had a theme. On Independence Day and Republic Day there were stirring patriotic songs. Sometimes they played songs from a particular music director or a film director, or a film star. So when it was Guru Dutt, Geeta Dutt’s mellifluous voice filled the air. Dev Anand meant songs from Guide, Hare Rama Hare Krishna and Asli Naqli and S.D. Burman meant some more heaven. Bhoole Bisre Geet, Chaya Geet...

“We finished dinner by 9.00 p.m. just so that no one had to get up and go into the kitchen while Binaca Geetmala was on,” says Rani who says they also had certain chores that were done only while sitting in front of the radio. She remembers Geeton Bhari Kahahi and other radio skits on Hawa Mahal. Even now, when she is alone, Rani puts on the radio full blast. “I feel there is someone else with me at home,” she says. Binaca Geetmalastarted in 1952 and Ameen Sayani curated the programme until 1988 when it shifted from Radio Ceylon to Vividh Bharti. Sales of records and listeners votes decided which song made it to the top. The first Sar Taj Geet was ‘Yeh Zindagi Usiki Hai’ (Anarkali) sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The year Raju was born it was ‘Hai Apna Dil To Awaara’ (Solva Saal) sung by Hemant Kumar. The year I was born it was ‘Teri Pyari Pyari Surat Ko’ (Sasural), sung by Mohammed Rafi. In 1988, when it was still Binaca Geetmala from Radio Ceylon, the top song was ‘Papa Kehte Hain’ (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak) sung by Udit Narayan. That was also the year my son was born.
