AIR Pune celebrates centenary year of Ustad Bismillah Khan

Ustad Bismillah Khan (21 March 1916 – 21 August 2006) was perhaps single-handedly responsible for making the Shehnai a famous classical instrument. He brought the Shehnai to the center stage of Indian music with his concert in the Calcutta All India Music Conference in 1937. He was credited with having almost monopoly over the instrument as he and the Shehnai are almost synonyms. Ustad Bismillah Khan was one of the finest musicians in post-independent Indian classical music and one of the best examples of Hindu-Muslim unity in India. He played the Shehnai to audiences across the world. He was known to be so devoted to his art form that he referred to Shehnai as his begum (wife in Urdu) after his wife died. On his death, as an honour, his Shehnai was buried with him. He was known for his vision of spreading peace and love through music.

To pay tributes to Bharat Ratna, Ustad Bismillah Khan, AIR Pune organised a musical concert 'SWAR GUNGOTRI' in Auditorium and celebrated his 100th Birth anniversary year. In the beginning Shri. Ashish Bhatnagar DDG (Engg.) and Head of Station along with Shri. Ravindra Khasnis, Asst. Dir. (Prog.) and Head of Programme garlanded the photo of Ustad Bismillah Khan.

Then Shri. Madhukar Dhumal presented Shehnai. He received the initial training from Pandit Rajaram Shukla and 'Gunigandharva' Laxmanprasad Jaipurwale. He is team member of many famous Hindi music directors like Laxmikant Pyarelal, Rajesh Roshan, Bhappi Lahiri, A.R.Reheman, Ismail Darbar, Ram Laxman and Marathi Music director Shridhar Phadke. His one of the master piece is title music of Hindi film 'Swadesh'. During performance he was accompanied by Shri. Vijay Belbansi on Shehnai, Shri. Prashant Jadhav on Shehnai, Pandit Ramdas Palsule on Tabla and Shri. Vijay Pawar on Harmonium. First he presented Rag Puriya followed by Rag Durga. In memory of Ustad Bismillah Khan, he played Bismillah Khan's favourite 'Dhun in Mishr Khamaj' and at last 'Thumari Sindha Bhairavi'. Heart throbbing melodies to the ecstatic crowd, filled every inch of the auditorium. His performance was greatly appreciated by invited audience. A very special thing about Shri. Madhukar Dhumal is that he suffered from cancer of mouth few years back, had to be operated and a portion of his mouth had to be removed. So dedicated and courageous is Shri Dhumal, that he not only retook Shehanai vadan but excelled in it giving his music to many famous hindi films.

The entwined twins (jugalbandi) a duet of two solo musicians Shri. Balkrishna Salunke on Shehnai and Shri. kailash Patra on Violin presented their performance. Pandit Ramdas Palsule accompanied on Tabla. Shri. Balkrishna Salunke is B High Grade for Shehnai and A Grade for Clarinet artist of All India Radio, at present working as staff artist in BH Mumbai. He received the initial training from his father Shri. Gangadhar Salunke and Pandit Rajaram Shukla . Shri. Kailash Patra is A-Grade artist of All India Radio. He received the initial training from Smt. Padmini Khuntia, Pandit Sunakar Sahoo and western music from Mr. Antony Francis. First both artist presented 'Rag Maru Bihag' and then 'Dhun'. The niche crowd liked every single minute of the performance and often went into endless cheers and clapping to their hearts content.

Music enthralled the crowd for almost more than two hours sending them into an ocean of bliss and ecstasy. Shri. Kishor Khadkikar, PEX (Music) was chief organiser. Programme was hosted by Shri. Mangesh Waghmara, Sr. Announcer, AIR Pune. He thanked all those present in the auditorium for the whole hearted support and love. Technical support was extended by Shri. Ravindra Ranjekar and his team comprising Shri. Karadkar, Shri. Pardeshi, Shri. Ghatole and Shri. Raut. This programme's recording will be broadcast on 22nd August at 10:00 pm by all AIR stations in Maharashtra.
