Revisiting old Doordarshan News Readers and Anchors - Avinash Kaur Sarin


Avinash Kaur Sarin is a celebrated Indian News Anchor,Journalist,Voice Artist, Documentary Director and television personality. She presented news as one of the primary News anchors of "Doordarshan",the National News Network of India.She later went on to direct several documentaries for Doordarshan on Asian culture." She was also elected as a member of the official panel of director/producers at Doordarshan. She was the first newsreader who would always sport a smile when greeting viewers and her charm formed an instant repertoire with the audience. She was known for her characteristic style large Bindi which went on to become a rage with 80's women all over India. So did her hand woven and crafted Indian Sarees.

Born in a Sikh family with her father as a Professor in Music, Avinash was hugely influenced by Indian culture since childhood.Her bent towards the arts was obvious.With a double degree in Bachelors(Honours) in Physics from Miranda House, University Of Delhi and Bachelors of Education (University Of Delhi), Sarin started her tryst with television as an anchor of a Science Show, "Vigyan Patrika "On Doordarshan in 1979.After being immediately noticed for her voice, diction, magnetic screen presence and immediate personal connect with the viewers,the producers at Doordarshan immediately asked her to audition after which there was no looking back.She went on your to become one of the most popular and celebrated news anchor of the decades of 80s and 90s in India. In fact, during the 1984 riots in Delhi, when she was out of sight for a month due to health reasons, millions of letters of queries, including one from the President's House were incessantly being sent to the Doordarshan head office in Delhi enquiring about her well-being. This was a precedent of sorts in the history of television at the time.

Avinash Kaur married Businessman Manjit Singh Sarin in New Delhi, India. They went on to have 2 children, a daughter, actress and danseuse Rubin Sarin and a son, Avijit Sarin who is currently working at The World Bank. She currently holds seminars, evaluations and screenings of upcoming newsreaders at Doordarshan and Indian Institute of Mass Communication. She also travels all over the world for workshops on anchoring and broadcasting and travels between her 2 homes, one in New Jersey, United States and the other in New Delhi, India.
