Media should avoid sensationalism: Naidu

New Delhi, Nov 15 (PTI) Media should avoid sensationalism and news should be presented without mixing views, but it is often the other way round, Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said today.Speaking at an event where he presented the Akashvani Annual Awards, Naidu emphasised that "information with confirmation" is the greatest weapon be it against corruption or other social evils."People come to me and talk about their plans to start a news channel. I always say, be nearer to truth, keep away from sensationalising. But often it is the opposite that happens.
However, All India Radio (AIR) is one exception," Naidu said.He said that another practice which prevails is of mixing news and views, which is not the proper thing."But that has become the order of the day for many people. You want to thrust your views on the viewers. You say this is my view, if there are takers, they will take it. But news has to be news," Naidu said.He said that information with conformation is the greatest weapon against corruption and other evils but often sensationalism becomes the norm.Speaking at the event where Minister of State for I&B Rajyavardhan Rathore and Prasar Bharati Chairman A Surya Prakash were also present, Naidu hailed the role played by AIR saying it worked without a break even against odds, be it natural calamities or law and order problems.Naidu also emphasised that cultural and spiritual heritage of the country is a great asset and the entire world looks towards India for it. This heritage, he said, should be maintained and showcased. He said Akashvani Annual Awards are a distinct recognition. He, however, wondered why awards for the year 2012 were being given in 2016. The awards for 2016 should be given by the end of the year, he added.
