The sanction was received within three days. Further details were worked out, a plan was prepared and transmitter was fitted on January 17, 2017. Initially, aartis will be broadcast at a fixed time, followed by relay programmes from Ahemednagar Akashvani. "The station has the technical capacity and a dedicated optical fibre cable in place from Shirdi to Ahmednagar. The switch is in Ahmednagar currently. But, there is another switch in Shirdi. In time, the switch for the aarti transmission will be operated from Shirdi," added Hasalgikar.

According to the schedule, aarti will be broadcast from 4.30 am to 6 am, Ahmednagar Akashvani programmes will be transmitted from 6 am to 12 noon. It will help broadcast aarti and Sai bhajans," said Suresh Haware, Chairman of the Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust in Shirdi.

The Ahmednagar Akashvani frequency was clear only till Babhaleshwar, about 20-22 kilometres away from Shirdi. "We are very happy that a dedicated radio station for Shirdi and its neighbouring areas will commence soon," said Amita Korhalkar, a homemaker in Kopargaon, situated near Shirdi. Inspiration-How Padma Shri awardee Eco Baba revived a river with public support.

Environment activist from Punjab Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal was conferred the Padma Shri this year for infusing life into Kali Bein, a 160-km rivulet where Guru Nanak is believed to have earned enlightenment about 517 years ago.It took the 55-year-old, who is also referred as Eco Baba, 16 years of voluntary service to rejuvenate the rivulet, which was reduced to a “filthy drain.” He also beautified the river banks and also built bathing ghats and brick roads. The rivulet rises from Hoshiarpur district of Punjab before flowing into the confluence of the Sutlej and Beas. That’s hardly an exaggeration. In 2000, when Seechewal took on the mission to clean and reclaim the rivulet, the entire stretch was clogged with silt and hyacinth and was polluted by effluents from industry and residential areas.

There is not a single locality along the 160-km stretch dotted with 72 villages and six towns where he failed to garner support for his mission. He even managed to make the Punjab State Pollution Control Board persuade the industrial units not to dump effluent into the river. Now in his own headquarters at Seechewal, the Eco Baba gets up at 2am for prayer. The physical activity in his centre at Seechewal – where about 150 disciples live – begins at 5am.He has also set up a forest nursery that distributes one lakh saplings every year. The ‘baba’ also runs a school for migrant labourers.

Many administrators now want to follow his model to resuscitate other rivers.

Inspiration:Padma Shri celebrates Dehu's own 'Swachhata Doot', Dr SV Mapuskar.

Dr S V Mapuskar, who was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri award in a list of many unsung heroes this year, is a known name in Dehu village, some 40 km from Pune.
He was among the rare breed of doctors that believed in not just treating a disease, but also preventing it.The villagers speak endlessly about the man who transformed their village and pioneered breakthroughs in areas of sanitation, family planning and health. Although the doctor passed on in October 2015, his memories are still fresh in the minds of locals, who cannot stop thanking him for his selfless service since 1959.

Locals remember him as someone who they could approach even after duty hours – the good doctor always obliged. It was this reputation that made them agree to let him build toilets, though back then, they didn’t exactly approve of these ‘new-fangled’ closed toilets.

Unfortunately, the toilets Mapuskar built washed away in the first monsoon of his tenure. Thereafter, the locals did not even let him utter the ‘T’ word for the next two or three years. But, he wasn’t the type to give up. Mapuskar read a lot more and researched further, only to come across Appasaheb Patwardhan’s concept. Patwardhan — better known as Konkan Gandhi — had built Asia’s first biogas plant connected to a toilet; this was the concept Mapuskar emulated and brought to Dehu.

Over the years, Mapuskar built several toilets in Dehu and eventually spread the idea to other states, too. These were no ordinary toilets, but came with a biogas tank. The gases generated from this plant were used to cook and provide gardening water. Even today, several houses in Dehu village are verdant with the plants that grew from this amenity.
