Thirupoonthuruthy Venkatesan is no more

Thirupoonthuruthy Venkatesan, who dedicated his life to the propagation of Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini, the longest dance-drama in Sanskrit written by Sri Narayana Tirtha, is no more. He was 83. The sincerity with which he organised the Jayanti and Aradhana of the saint was moving. His forefathers were conducting the aradhana of the saint and the mantle fell on Venkatesan, who took it to a different level by organising festivals and Tarangam competitions. A disciple of Alathur Srinivasan Venaktesan was a top-ranking artiste of AIR and Doordarshan, his concerts broadcast several times in a span of 50 years. Thanks to Venkatesan, musicians got acquainted with many of the hymns because it was mandatory that songs should not be repeated at the festivals that he conducted. Veterans considered it an honour and aspirants a blessing to perform at the Akhandam. The Taranga Vidyalaya in Thanjavur, run by the Thirupoonthuruthy Narayana Tirtha Aradhana Committee, trains hundreds of children in the rendition of the saint’s songs. Another accomplishment of Venkatesan was the memorial that the Committee raised for Tirtha at Tirupoonthuruthy, where the saint attained samadi. A guest house with amenities and prayer hall on the banks of the Cauvery was raised with funds he collected from philanthropists. The family parted with their ancestral house to complete the project.
Musicians’ support
Venkatesan enjoyed the support of eminent musicologists, including Dr. V. Raghavan and artistes such as M.S. Subbulakshmi and Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. Srinivasa Iyer notated about 50 gitams of Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini, which was published by the Trust. Dr. Raghavan was one of the main architects of the Thirupoonthuruthy Sri Narayana Tirtha Aradhana Committee. K.J. Yesudas has been a trustee from the inception of the Trust and has given seven performances at Tirtha’s brindavanam. The sleepy village of Thirupponthuruthy would come alive during the Aradhana festival. The villagers would come with milk and cartloads of vegetables and fruits, which would be offered to Tirtha and distributed. It was, therefore, not surprising when a van full of villagers arrived at the crematorium on Sunday last to pay their respects.
Venkatesan’s family — wife Rajalakshmi, daughters Neela and Lakshmi — supported Venkatesan in all his efforts. Continuing his legacy would be the best tribute to the man, whose life revolved round Sri Narayana Tirtha.

Retiring message from Ms.Anjani Bhatt, PEX, DDK Ahmedabad; who is superannuating on 30th April'2017

After a long, successful and satisfying stint of 33 years with Doordarshan Kendra, Ahmedabad,  I am retiring from service on 30th April 2017. I had started my career with Doordarshan as a Librarian and today I am retiring as a Programme Executive. Throughout my career, I have served this office with utmost sincerity and loyalty as a Librarian, Duty Officer and Programme Executive. For the last 33 years that I have been with Doordarshan, I have seen a lot of changes in the organization and I have always been supported and encouraged by my seniors and colleagues. We have all managed over the years to get along and grow as a unit, dividing up our areas of expertise, yet coming together when it was required. I am very happy and proud to be a part of this organization, as we are the only Public Service Broadcaster which has catered to each and every one of this country with its educative, informative and entertaining programmes.
So now, a new beginning for me, a new journey, the time everyone calls “retirement”... the time that is for all those hobbies and activities I did not have time to do when I had a career. It will be a difficult transition for sure, as my career has been a passion for me all these years. I will begin this new life with a lot more zeal and enthusiasm.
I am thankful to one and all and bid a humble farewell with a heartfelt prayer and wish that all my friends and colleagues get timely promotions for which they have been deprived of for so many years, which will be a great motivation to the new generation that is joining this beautiful organization.
I wish everyone all the very best for their future endeavors !!!!

Prasar Bharati Parivar wishes him a very happy, healthy, peaceful and contended retired life.

Here is the first recording done on April 27, 1935

What you hear is what was recorded in On April 27, 1935 in the Ludwigshaven Theater using the pictured AEG Magnetophon prototype. Four different prototypes were built between 1932 and 1934, and this is the last one. It should have been exposed in the 1934 Berlin Radio Fair, but still had some troubles, especially a major design issue where the tape would break if you did not wait until the reels stop before playing/rewinding. There was no fast forward and the capstan motor was asynchronous, hence audible pitch variation. Its improved successor became the Magnetophon K1 (which is a visually different machine).

The cuts, pitch variations and other sound "defects" are authentic. The tape used was the early gray Carbonyl Iron type, quickly replaced by black Fe3O4 tapes in 1936. The tape speed was 1 meter per second (100cm/s).

Consider opening a Generic Medicine Shop and help the Nation..

Jan Aushadhi Campaign - Making quality medicines available at affordable prices for all, particularly the poor and disadvantaged through exclusive outlets of “Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra” so as to reduce and redefine the unit cost of treatment per person.

The branded (Generic) medicines are sold at significantly higher prices than their un-branded generic equivalents, though are identical in the therapeutic value. Given the widespread poverty across the country, making available reasonably priced quality generic medicines in the market would benefit everyone. With this objective, the Pharma Advisory Forum, decided to launch the Jan Aushadhi Campaign - starting with the sale of generic medicines through dedicated sales outlets called Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendra in various districts of the country. It is proposed that at least one PMBJK will be opened in each district of the country to be extended to sub-divisional levels as well as major towns and village centers......

....... Individual applicants other than doctors and registered medical practitioners, should mandatorily be persons having B. Pharma and D. Pharma Degrees. Any organization applying for a PMBJK will have to employ B. Pharma / D. Pharma degree holders and produce proof of the same at the time of submitting applications. In govt hospital premises including medical colleges, the preferred agency would be reputed NGOs/Charitable organizations but individuals would also be eligible........

All India Radio enters Phase II of DRM in India

All India Radio has received kudos from Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu for successfully completed phase-I of the national DRM digital radio roll-out.This involved the installation of 37 DRM transmitters, now operational, throughout the country. Of these, 35 are medium wave and two are shortwave transmitters. Both SW transmitters are for international service and are broadcasting in pure DRM. Out of the 35 MW transmitters, two are broadcasting in pure DRM, carrying two audio services in digital; the other 33 transmitters are working in simulcast mode. Out of these, 25 MW transmitters are working for 1 hour in pure DRM every day (Monday to Saturday). The transmission powers of these 35 transmitters are: 1000 kW (two), 300 kW (six), 200 kW (10), 100 kW (11) and 20 kW (six); two SW transmitters are 500 kW and 250 kW each.

As part of Phase II of the DRM introduction in the country, AIR is demonstrating the full complement of services which are part of the DRM standard. Phase-II of the DRM project by offering full features/services from these DRM transmitters and improves service quality. With the finalization of Phase-II, the full-featured DRM services will finally be available to listeners. Also, a public information campaign will be initiated to inform the Indian citizens of the completely new and future oriented DRM radio platform and its many benefits. The first steps of Phase II of the digital radio roll-out project are already visible and audible to listeners in Delhi. The DRM transmissions from Delhi/Nangli now provide excellent audio quality based on DRM’s xHE-AAC audio codec. It also includes DRM text messages and Journaline. The advanced text service Journaline provides detailed news of various topics to listeners – accessible on the radio set screen – free of charge, without requiring Internet access.

During Phase-II, most transmitters will carry a new DRM signal while still maintaining the analog AM transmission to support existing analog receivers (the ‘simulcast’ mode of DRM) – with all-digital transmissions available during certain times of the day. This is made available in the simulcast configuration and with the most robust DRM transmission configuration, enabling increased in-door coverage.Twenty-one DRM transmitters are now operating in pure DRM for one hour everyday, in addition to simulcast operation. The feedback received by AIR about the reception quality of DRM signals is very good.AIR is planning to enhance the DRM service from Chennai, Pune and Bengaluru very shortly.

Phase-III, as presented by AIR, will eventually culminate in the complete transition of radio services to the digital DRM platform, improving the number and quality of radio services and extra features for the listeners, while also saving tremendous amounts of transmission power every year. The Hyderabad-based Mobis Technical Center of India (MTCI) joined hands with NXP India, a global automotive semiconductor maker, to develop the digital radio broadcasting receiver that can cover the entire country for the first time in India.

Hyundai Mobis were in charge of receiver development and vehicle testing, and NXP took charge of semiconductor chip development. This product drastically improved radio broadcasting in India where only 40 per cent of the country is able to receive FM signals. It was highly recognized by the Indian Digital Radio Broadcasting Association. In her message, DRM Consortium Chair Ruxandra Obreja has said: “According to the latest reports about AIR, DRM is stronger and better heard than ever, with some extra features that give the DRM the upper hand over analogue.”

I am going to retire this month. Today my engineering colleagues of AIR, DD, NZ, NABM, R&D arranged a farewell lunch in Akashvani Bhawan. Kerala: This incredible radio project aims to ensure safety of fishermen

It is a well known fact that fishermen live an extremely dangerous life and that risking themselves on a daily basis is routine for them, which is why a collaborative project that grew out of a competition at the University of Sussex, has created a special initiative in order to safeguard the lives of these fishermen. Fishermen have no option but to venture deeper into the heart of the sea on small boats, when fish stocks take a hit due to overfishing and climate change. Them and their flimsy vessels are prone to accidents, especially during the monsoon season from June to August, and the absence of navigational aids or radio communication simply heightens the risks.

Radio Monsoon, a one of its kind project, is designed to help, using a low-tech forecast service to ensure safer working conditions among the 30,000-plus fishing families in the area. During its pilot, Radio Monsoon provided daily forecasts in Malayalam, designed for 10 fishing villages along the Thiruvananthapuram coast, reports the Guardian. Based on the statistics and information from the Indian Meteorological Department, the centre for ocean information services, as well as local knowledge, Radio Monsoon’s forecasts are circulated through social media, loudspeakers placed in harbours, and by word of mouth.

Fishermen can also access forecasts over a phone line supported by an internet server and their feedback is collected regularly and sent back to the forecasters so that the information can be tailored to their needs. Maxmillan Martin, a native of Kerala and is now a research associate at the University of Sussex, first had the idea for Radio Monsoon in collaboration with friends after the deadly 2004 tsunami. The group includes a retired teacher, a journalist, a user interface designer and a social media expert, all from Kerala, who came up with a narrowcast system whereby forecasts recorded on to CDs would be played in the harbour. “It was a very low-tech intervention but the fishermen loved it and the local forecasters did too. It worked but we went on with our lives,” says Martin.

Martin, who has a background in geography, brought the idea to life while doing his PhD at the University of Sussex, and entered it into a competition for innovation funding. The initiative ran for while until 2016, but it ran out of funds. Meanwhile, the team of malayalee geniuses is working on re-launching and expanding the project, whilst monitoring its impact on fatalities and the search and rescue operations that currently save about 3,000 lives a year.

Inspiration - As an Engineer He Earned Rs 24 Lakh. As a Farmer He Earns Rs 2 Crore!

Sachin, would often visit at the village and was fascinated by the stories of farming told by his grandfather. However, like many middle class families in India, Sachin’s parents also wanted him to become an engineer or a doctor. Sachin loved studying too, so he fulfilled his parents’ wishes by completing his mechanical engineering course from REC, Nagpur (now called as VRCE) in2000. A profound learner, Sachin also finished his MBA (finance) course just after his engineering and he is also a law graduate.

In 2007, Sachin also started his PhD in developmental economics. This was when the spark of entrepreneurship ignited in his mind. Thoughts like why he was working for someone else and not for himself kept disturbing him while he was still climbing the ladder of success in his corporate life.

“While thinking about options for entrepreneurship, I came to the conclusion that the food industry is the most important yet the most ignored one by us. That is when I recalled the lessons given by my grandfather about farming,” says Sachin, while speaking to TBI from his farm.

Sachin’s grandfather would often tell him how one can survive without earning money at any given point but one cannot survive without food. So if you know the art of growing your own food, you can survive at any condition. He would also take Sachin to their 25-acre ancestral land and talk about how it was his dream to revive the entire land into a farm someday. Among various lessons that his grandfather gave him, Sachin focused on this one issue: the availability of labor.

Sachin started thinking about how he could benefit the farmers, but he knew that to become an agripreneur, he would have to first learn farming and set an example by drawing more profit.
In 2013, Sachin left his luxurious life in Gurgaon, where he was working as a manager for Punj Lloyd, getting a hefty salary of 24 lakh per annum, and shifted to Medhpar to become a farmer.

Talking about challenges, Sachin says: “Everything was a challenge, as I had absolutely no clue about farming. I had to learn everything from tilling the land to sowing the seeds.”

Sachin invested his entire provident fund of 15 years and decided that he would go back to the corporate life if he’s unsuccessful as he had a family that was dependent on him.

Thus in 2014, Sachin launched his own company, Innovative Agrilife Solutions Pvt. Ltd., which helped farmers with the contract farming model of farming. Sachin also hired consultants from the Agriculture College at Bilaspur to teach the farmers new technology and the right way of farming. The basic fundamentals of contract farming is very simple and profitable.

Our Cultural Heritage-
