AIR honours its women engineers

The All India Radio has recognised its women engineers by instituting an annual award which was given along with other awards at an event presided over by Minister for Information and Broadcasting M Venkaiah Naidu here last evening. Riya Mukherjee, EA AIR Kolkata and Th Thoithoi Chanu, EA AIR Imphal were conferred with the 'Best Woman Engineer' awards.

In one of its kind award instituted in the name of late M L Manchanda, ex-station engineer who was martyred in a terrorist attack in May 1992 at Patiala while performing his duties, the AIR has created a category of the 'Best Maintained Difficult Station', which went to Godhra station for 2015 and to AIR Ooty for 2014.

The 'Best Women's Programme' award was given to 'Jeevanam Mritsanjeevanan' (Malayalam) of AIR Thiruvananthapuram. The programme is an effort to encourage organ donation among women and the society as a whole and thus depicts the story of two women and the indomitable will and courage they display on donation of their organs.

The award for the 'Innovative Programme' was vested to 'Mai Kuchh Nahi Karti' (Hindi) of AIR Raipur. This novel feature salutes all those mothers and housewives who are unknowingly performing the onerous as well as the most important job of nation building. The best 'Radio Documentary' award went to 'Kahani Sutlej Di'(Punjabi) of AIR Jalandhar. The documentary portrays the strenuous efforts of environmentalist Balbeer Singh Seechewal, who has become a success story in cleaning the river Sutlej in Punjab.

The 'Best News Editor of the year' was awarded to Chandrika Joshi, AIR New Delhi. 'Akashvani Annual Awards' is an annual feature since 1974 and it is one of the most prestigious and old awards in the arena of Public Service Broadcasting in India.

AIR has instituted these awards in the memory of those among its staff who laid their lives while waging relentless counter offensive through the medium of broadcasting against the forces inimical to the integrity and unity of India. UNI PY SW 1416
