May Day with a Difference – Akashvani Pune parivar hosts confident Children of poor workers, gifts them Radio Sets
I will become IPS officer says beaming Vaishnavi glowing with confidence in her eyes. Her father Ashok Raikar is a worker with a small steel industry. Sudha Rani whose father sells vegetable on the road is committed to become a Chartered Accountant. Priyanka, a class Xth student, daughter of Gyaneshwar, a poor construction worker will become Doctor. These shots of emerging India were some of the glimpses of the May Day celebration organised by Akashvani Pune Parivar.
They come out of their shabby slums to create beautiful Homes for Us. They live in these under construction houses without doors & windows. They leave these houses, once they are complete to handover them to Us. Often, they become unwanted and are denied entry to the premises, which they Created. But they hardly complain. They are the Janmdatas, who give birth to our Homes.
As a tribute to their hard work and their contribution towards creating infrastructure for a New and Emerging India, Akashvani Pune parivar organized an event on 01-05-2018 to celebrate May Day with the children of Construction workers, in association with Door Step School Pune who are actively engaged in educating the children of these construction workers near their sites/homes. These kids are the most prized possession of these construction workers. They are not only the future hope of their families, but in their success lies the real success of the Nation and Society.
This was probably the first time for all these construction workers and their children that they had entered the premises of Akashvani, the public Service Broadcasters of our country. They came inside with their eyes wide open and the children thrilled while a motivational documentary emphasising the need for education and empowerment was screened for them at the Akashvani Pune auditorium. Mrs. Mridula Ghodke, famous Marathi News Reader of Akashvani Pune anchored the programme successfully and hosted an interactive talk show with these construction workers and their children where-in they opened up their hearts and their words touched the audience deep inside.
These children and their parents were provided a guided tour to the studios of Akashvani Pune from where the programmes which they often hear on their radio sets originate. They also got the opportunity to see the majestic drama, music and talk studios which have witnessed the recordings of legendary musicians and personalities.
Employees of Akashvani Pune again proved their commitment for the social cause and displayed solidarity by collecting a handsome amount of over Rs.15,000 to give all these invited kids a Radio set each, which will entertain, educate and empower them thus paving way for a better India.
Ms. Bhavana Kulkarni, Director Door Step School narrated her experiences while working with the construction workers’ kids.
