Inspiration - This man quit his job at Google to sell samosas, has a turnover of Rs 50 lakh.

Very few find the courage to leave behind a secure and stable life in pursuit of their passion. Munaf Kapadia quit his well-paying job at the multinational giant Google to sell samosas. His conviction and hard work paid off and, today, his company has a yearly turnover of Rs 50 lakh.

For most IT professionals, landing a job at Google is a dream. Not only does it have a brand value, but it also assures the employee of a good salary and stability. However, Munaf left his job at Google to sell samosas and is now the proud owner of The Bohri Kitchen (TBK) in Mumbai.

Munaf got his degree in MBA a few years ago and left the country after a couple of years of working here, and started his stint at Google. However, after working for a few years for Google, he wished to explore better opportunities. The idea of starting his own business struck him and he returned to India.

Munaf’s mother Nafisa had a keen interest in watching cooking shows on television and is an excellent cook herself. Taking tips from his mother, he decided to open a food chain. He let a few people sample his mother's food. The idea to invite people over for a paid meal was a hit and that’s how The Bohri Kitchen, a concept food dining experience in Mumbai, was born.
There is a demand for TBK’s samosas among famous celebrities and five-star hotels. A variety of dishes other than samosas is also sold here such as nargis kebab, dabba gosht, and many others. Despite this restaurant being only a year old, it has a turnover of Rs 50 lakh. Munaf wishes to expand and increase the yearly turnover to nearly Rs 5 crore in a few years.

His restaurant is so famous that people wait in long queues to get their turn. Munaf has
been featured in the Forbes Under 30 list and credits his entire success to his mother.

Radio station battles odds to touch hearts beyond borders

GUWAHATI: Akashvani Dibrugarh, one of the 27 All India Radio (AIR) stations in the Northeast, can take pride in success against the odds. The genesis of the radio station goes back to the post India-China War times, when the facility was established to counter Chinese waves from high-frequency transmitters across the international border. Having battled manpower crunch, for almost 50 years now, the most remarkable feat during difficulty is that it has been able to strike an “emotional” chord with not just the people of Upper Assam but of neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland as well. Currently, it has a little over 60 people working in different departments, including engineering and administrative departments. Sources say that it is understaffed by about 50 per cent.

“Yes, manpower wise, we are battling a crunch. But as far as our programmes are concerned, we are right up where we should be, thanks to the dedication of our staff. The golden jubilee year celebration started from February this year and we have set a target of transmitting 3000 new innovative programme, and some of them have already become popular in not just Assam, but also in Arunachal and Nagaland. So, yes, in a way, we have been able to cross boundaries,” Lohit Deka, the programme head of AIR, Dibrugarh, told The Shillong Times. The radio station, which is now fully digital, caters to over one crore listeners in Eastern Assam and parts of Arunachal and Nagaland.“The involvement of people has been impressive too. There is a section who regularly takes part in our programmes. Others are regular listeners. The feedback, either through letters or through posts on our Facebook page has been great,” Deka said.

As a matter of fact, a 25-minute programme – Akashbani Dibrugarh Aru Moi – which is basically a public interface programme transmitted once a week, is among the most popular of them all.“People from as far as Pasighat and Itanagar have communicated to us about the popularity of the programme. Most people in Arunachal Pradesh understand and can speak Assamese. So the connect has been great so far,” he said.AIR Dibrugarh has a daily transmission time of 16 hours. Progammes are transmitted in 12 languages and dialects. They are Assamese, English, Hindi, Mising Deori, Singpho besides dialects of six indigenous groups of Arunachal Pradesh.

The radio station has lived up to its aim of promoting culture and heritage as well.
“AIR Dibrugarh has been promoting folk music for the past three years through a special programme, Lok Sangeet Madhuri, which is the first radio reality show on folk music. We have transmitted programmes on Kamrupi Lokageet, which has been a tremendous success in terms of public response. In Meghalaya too, AIR has undertaken similar programmes,” Deka said.

Inspiration - Mary Kom becomes first female boxer to win 6 gold medals at World Championships.

Mary Kom has done it again!
Mary Kom defeated Ukraine's Hanna Okhota in the final of the Women's World Boxing Championships to clinch the gold medal in the 48kg category and her sixth world title at the K.D. Jadhav Indoor Stadium on Saturday.

Mary Kom is now the most successful boxer in the tournament's history and won the gold exactly 16 years after she had won it for the first time.

"First of all, I would like to thank all my fans. Thank you guys, I don't have anything to give you. What I can give you is a gold for the country. They came especially for me and the Indian contingent. Today, I was a little bit emotional because for the last few years, I was not able to fight in 48 kg category," an emotional Mary said after the bout.

Mary, who went over her weight category to clinch a 51kg bronze at the London Olympics, previously clinched the World Championship gold on five occasions -- 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 -- besides bagging a silver on her debut in 2001.

"I had to jump to other categories. The effort was very challenging for me. Because of your love and support, I hope to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. I wasn't able to qualify for Rio Games. I am still suffering.

"I can easily give a gold in the 48 kg category, but 51 kg, it's difficult because other boxers may have a height advantage," Mary added while breaking into tears.

Mary is now the most successful boxer in the tournament's history with 6 gold medals .

Inspiration - Real-Life Rancho Returns to Odisha Village, Sets Up Innovation School for Rural Kids!

Anil Pradhan with students from IPSRI. (Source: Facebook)
The son of a tailor-turned CRPF jawan, this brilliant innovator was earlier in the news for designing a robot that could climb electric poles and do other dangerous tasks!

Rancho, the character played by Aamir Khan in the 2009-Bollywood blockbuster ‘3 Idiots,’ remains one of the most endearing characters ever to grace the silver screen.
If a vast majority of teachers in India knew how to impart the joy of learning like Rancho, this country would have a generation of students imparting real change in local communities. That’s one way of building a nation from the ground-up.

Fortunately for the people of 42 Mouza (a cluster of villages on an island 12 km away from Cuttack, Odisha) there exists 22-year-old Anil Pradhan, a local boy, whose International Public School for Rural Innovation (IPSRI) in Baral village is imparting the joy of science, technology and innovation to young rural students for free.
Pradhan, however, found his calling after school when he enrolled into the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Sambalpur, where besides studying civil engineering he got into the varsity’s robotics society.

he decided to come back home and establish a centre for learning and innovation.
“I was born in 42 Mouza and left the area to receive a good education. But I don’t want people to migrate towards the cities for a decent education. They should have that facility at home, especially for underprivileged students who don’t find good schools nearby. I also found that the conventional school curriculum puts a burden on students. Such a system does not produce creative and innovative students who can find solutions for society. To address these concerns, I started this school,” he tells The Better India.

“The objective of this school is to develop innovative students who will be skilled enough to solve real-life problems through science, technology and innovation. Our lessons are more practical. The teaching methodology is quite innovative which makes students learn complex subjects in a simpler and creative way. Having said that, we can’t impose the same curriculum on every child. Every child is different and capable of doing something different. Rather, we have a set of experiments which helps a child understand his capabilities in a particular field,” says Pradhan.

“We also have set of activities which includes playing, crafting and experimenting which helps us know, to what extent a student is inclined towards a particular field,” says Pradhan.

Besides teaching them basic science and math concepts through practical applications, students are also encouraged to innovate. For example, one lesson entails students learning innovative gardening hacks with plastic bottles, which allows them to observe a seed, nurture it and see the growth before them. Besides teaching them how to utilise plastic waste instead of just dumping it, students learn the basics of biology and the art of taking responsibility (for their plant). Aside from regular Yoga and PT classes, students undertake the Swachh Campus initiative, where every day for 10 minutes every child assist in cleaning the school campus.

“They use CDs to learn about pie charts, colour association to learn the world map and they even have the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals painted on their staircase,” says this Edex report on the school. Students are encouraged to memorise all the UN sustainable goals by serial number.

As the popular saying goes, “education is a gift, it shouldn’t be a burden.” Pradhan is determined to facilitate that spirit and give these children from low-income households in his area an education that actually means something.

II George, ADG(Training), NABM retires on 30.11.2018

5 years back I assumed charge of the Addl. Director General at NABM Delhi. When I am looking back I get the satisfaction that I have done my part well. It was a satisfying period of my career. Inspiration - This Andhra Commando Singlehandedly Fought Off 200 Naxals to Save His Colleagues!

Posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, this braveheart cop is a hero that India should not forget about. He was just 32-years-old when he made the supreme sacrifice to defend his unit.

On January 26, 2014, Karanam Venkata Ramana Naidu, a retired circle officer of the Andhra Pradesh Police, collected the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, from the President Pranab Mukherjee on behalf of his slain son K Prasad Babu, a sub-inspector in the State police’s anti-Maoist Greyhounds special operations force.

On April 16, 2013, Babu had heroically saved the lives of four fellow officers and taken out nine high ranking Maoist insurgents before he died on the battlefield. This brave officer from Marturu village in Visakhapatnam district, Andhra Pradesh, was only 32-years-old when he was fatally tortured and killed by Maoist insurgents.

Inspiration - Gitanjali Rao: Girl of 11 takes US young scientist prize

A schoolgirl aged 11 has been honoured as "America's top young scientist" for inventing a quick, low-cost test to detect lead-contaminated water.

Gitanjali Rao was selected from 10 finalists who had spent three months collaborating with scientists to develop their ideas.
Her device uses carbon nanotubes to detect the presence of lead.
Thousands of US water systems are reportedly contaminated by lead.

Gitanjali's invention was inspired by the scandal in Flint, Michigan, where officials are facing charges including manslaughter over water contamination in 2014-15, she told Business Insider.
Until now, testing reliably for lead was expensive and meant sending away samples for analysis.

But Gitanjali's portable invention - named Tethys, after the Greek goddess for fresh water - allows a sensor linked to a mobile app to give an accurate, almost immediate analysis via a mobile app.

"If you take a shower in contaminated water, you do get rashes and that can easily be studied by an epidemiologist," she told Business Insider. "And if somebody drinks lead in their water, their children might have small, minor defects."

Gitanjali said she wanted to further refine the device so it could eventually go on the market.
She said she wanted to be either a geneticist or epidemiologist when she grew up.

Gitanjali won a $25,000 (£19,000) prize for scooping the top award at the 2017 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.
